Content Quality for Heavy Equipment Manufacturers
Simplified English for Documentation in the Heavy Equipment Industry
Clarity in Writing for Heavy Equipment Manufacturers
Simplified Technical English (STE) is a controlled language standard that is used to write technical information and documentation in a clear, concise, and easy-to-understand manner. It is designed to make technical information accessible to a broader audience, including people with limited English proficiency, and to reduce the risk of misinterpretation or confusion. STE is used in various industries, such as aerospace, defense, and transportation, and is often required by international organizations and regulatory bodies. The specification is maintained by the Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD-STAN) and is known as ASD-STE100.
Because the specification is downloaded and used more and more outside of the aerospace and defense – as these industries face the same challenges – it has been renamed to:
STANDARD FOR TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION
In other words, STE is not just for aerospace and defense anymore. Actually, many other style guides use the same rules as the STE specification does, most of which are aimed at providing end-users of products and services with information that is easy to find and understand.

STE results in many values, including:
- Less downtime thanks to more efficient maintenance – Maintenance information will be easier and faster to find, understand and applied – did you know that a field service engineer on average spends 50% of his/her time on finding information?
- Positive brand perception – Your content creators (writers, engineers, SMEs) will all write with One Voice towards your customers – technical documentation, spare parts information, maintenance cards and many more documents will use the same terminology resulting in less confusion and frustration with your end users which will have a positive effect on your corporate branding.
- More efficiency in writing and translating – Because of consistency and clarity in the source language your translations will become cheaper and improve in quality.
Implementing Simplified English in the heavy equipment industry
If you are in the industry of construction, resource, energy & transportation, agricultural, forestry machinery, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives, we will outline the steps to take or at least take into consideration when implementing a content quality strategy.
- Standardize your terminology, to avoid confusion and reduce downtime. Maintenance information will much easier to understand and can also be found faster.
- Train your writers, to learn how to focus on the ‘need-to-know’, which can help reduce content and authoring / reviewing time by 40%!
- Use the HyperSTE platform to validate compliance, and automate and shorten the reviewing process.
- Have an on-going process in place to manage your KPIs.
